bout the Book

Christianity and Buddhism: A Comparison and a Contrast by T. Sterling Berry is a thoughtful exploration of two of the world’s major religions examining their core beliefs ethical teachings and spiritual goals. Originally delivered as the Donnellan Lectures at Trinity College Dublin in 1890 the work reflects a 19th-century Christian scholarly attempt to understand and engage with Buddhism which was gaining increased attention in the West at the time.

About the Author

T. Sterling Berry also styled as Thomas Sterling Berry (1854–1931) was an Irish Anglican clergyman and scholar best known as the ninth Bishop of Killaloe Kilfenora Clonfert and Kilmacduagh Educated at Trinity College Dublin he earned his Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) in 1884 and served in various ecclesiastical roles before his episcopal appointment. In 1889–1890 Berry delivered the prestigious Donnellan Lectures at Trinity College Dublin which were later published in 1891 as Christianity and Buddhism: A Comparison and a Contrast. This work presents a thorough comparative study of Christianity and Buddhism examining their beliefs doctrines and ethical teachings from a Christian perspective. Berry notably rejected theories that Buddhism had influenced Christianity maintaining instead the distinctiveness of Christian theology Despite criticisms of being speculative by today’s academic standards Berry’s lectures were valued for introducing Western audiences to Buddhist thought at a time when such comparative religious studies were rare. Later editions—some reprinted by Winsome Books India in 2004—made his original analysis accessible to modern readers Berry’s broader legacy lies in pioneering early interfaith discussion between East and West. His work remains a historical artifact reflecting the intellectual curiosity and theological engagement of the late 19th century grounded in Christian orthodoxy yet open to deeper dialogue with Eastern religions.
