About The Book
Mahabharata is an epic written by Bhagwan Vyasa the great vedic scholar and rishi nearly three thousand years before Christ about a great dynastic war between Kauravas and Pandavas the two branches of a single ruling family of India. The scene of its great battles was at the confluence of Ganges and Yamuna rivers near Delhi the present capital of India. By the time the learned rishi wrote the epic the stories of war had already become a part of legends and folk lores of our people The work of Vyasa however enshrined the story at a much higher plane emphasizing not only the historical aspects but also the moral philosophical and spiritual values as well. Little wonder that along with Ramayana by rishi Valmiki the two books have influenced and symbolized the essence of Indian culture of the preceding five millennia and will continue to do so for thousands of years to come.
The original Mahabharata has been aptly described as the mightiest single effort of literary creation of any culture in the world. In sheer size it is more than seven times of Iliad and Odyssey combined. The size limitation of my book has resulted in my concentrating on the main story and a few other important ones only. The fact is that the original works embellished by hundreds of interesting tales and Vedic stories which provide a social ethical moral and cosmological background to the central theme of the book that at first the evil might have an upper hand but eventually the good triumphs and that the adherence to Dharma ie righteousness leads to the victory.
Mahabharata also describes a highly evolved society in those days of India which had many autonomous as well as independent kingdoms. The education was imparted in Ashramas managed by great sages and located in sections of forest recesses. Women were actively involved in the work of their husbands and sons They were educated and highly honored. Its prime characters depict a great vitality and surprisingly not much different from India of today.
