About The Book
For the first time the voices of Tibet s diaspora find expression in an anthology of poetry composed in English: Muses In Exile. History teaches us that artistic and intellectual creativity reach their zenith under the most adverse conditions. And so it has been with Tibetan verse.
Of the thirty one writers published here some have already died young. One at home in Tibet; others in Alaska Toronto New Delhi and in the mecca of their exile Dharamshala. However far flung their lives the longing for a homeland the emigre s estrangement is expressed here in unison to a variety of literary tunes. This collection is testimony to the anguish rootlessness and unwavering destiny of a displaced people still mentally marching homeward across the Himalayas.
Bhuchung D. Sonam came from a tiny village in Tibet first to India as a refugee and then to the US to study journalism. When in school in TCV he used read a lot of books. Looking back he says this gave him more ideas and resources than lessons in the classroom. One time in school when he wanted to recite a poem in English about Tibet written by a Tibetan his search in the library was in vain.
This lack of creative expression by Tibetans and his won love for words later drove him to write. Published his first book of poems ‘Dandelions of Tibet’. Two years later his first anthology of poems written in English by a Tibetan Muses in Exile: An Anthology of Tibetan Poems was published. His third book of poems Conflict of Duality came out in 2006.
Mr. Sonam has a BA in Economics from St. Xavier’s College and MA in the same subject from M. S. University of Baroda. His first job was at Paljor Publication then a unit of the Department of Finance Tibetan Government-in-Exile where he translated a few books from Tibetan to English. He studied print and multimedia journalism from Emerson College Boston USA.
