A Jataka tale retold and illustrated by
Once upon a time there was a jungle so dense that the sun handy managed to pass through the foliage. Only a few sunbeams found their way down playing hide and seek on a river that meandered blue as lapis lazuli between banks covered in jade-green moss that was softer than velvet. There by this quiet river a young hare led his carefree life. He was a kind-hearted hare. He never threatened animals smaller than himself nor was he afraid of those that were bigger. The hare was equally friendly towards all animals and so most of them liked him. The hare s three best friends were a sporty otter clever jackal and a very mischievous monkey. They met every day and always had fun together. The quiet hare was a good influence on his companions and they became widely known for their amiable manners. Their good reputation spread all the way to the heavenly residence of the gods and the gods were filled with wonder.
